Welcome to Matt's weekly review number 3

Next week I promise to review a Marvel comic.

This week I will be reviewing Batwoman issue #6

STORY BY = J.H.WILLIAMS III , HADEN BLACKMAN

ART BY = AMY REEDER, RICHARD FRIEND, ROB HUNTER

COLORS BY = GUY MAJOR

LETTERS BY = TODD KLIEN

COVER BY = AMY REEDER

PUBLISHER = DC COMICS

Batwoman issue 6 feels more like an interlude issue than the next step foward.  J.H. Williams shows us how all the main players fit together, everyone from Batwoman to Flamebird and even the people behind the Weeping Woman are shown in the issue.  Because of this, the plot slows down and all we get to see is Batwoman's new nano-tube armor provided by D.E.O in action.

The new artist replacing J.H. Williams for this story arc is Amy Reeder, who does come with some experience drawing Batwoman in Batwoman #0.  Amy Reeder's art switches from jaw - dropping amazingly beautiful like the image below to sketchy and cartoony.

Even though Amy Reeder's page layouts do not come close to what we as readers expect to see from J.H Williams, she does quickly establish her own look and feel.  In short this was not a bad debut for Amy Reeder.

All in all Batwoman issue 6 is not bad but not great either.  I just wish the plot moved a bit further along with more consistent art.

I give Batwoman issue 6
3.5 stars of 5

Welcome to Matt's Weekly Review No.2

This week I will be reviewing I, Vampire #5

Publisher - DC COMICS

Story - Joshua Hale Fialkov

Art - Andrea Sorrentino

This is the best comic that your are not reading, but with issue number 5 the appearance of Batman gives you a reason not to read this comic.  Batman's interaction with Bennett and his vampire hunting crew comes off a bit flat and forced.  Writer Joshua Hale Fialkov does a poor job of making Batman's role in this issue have any substance other than a cheap way to boost sales, unlike Constantine's appearance in issue 4.  To me the series was awesome and explosive with no need for guest stars.  I just hate when great books do not get the praise they deserve.

Fialkov's writing through the first 5 issues with the exception of Batman has been great from issue to issue leaving you craving for more. Lets just hope that Fialkov can gets us through the next few issues with out to much Batman and return the focus back on Benett and his crew.
From issue #1 I can not say enough about Sorrentino's artwork it's beautiful and as always very high quality.  In issue #5 none of that changes, in fact there were certain times that I just had to stop reading and enjoy the art layout.  If I could rate this comic just on art it would be an easy 5 of 5 but unfortunately I can not.

 I, Vampire gets
2.5 Stars out of 5
(for Batman)

Welcome to review number 1 this weeks review will be on Batman issue 5 of the new 52.

STORY BY SCOTT SNYDER

ART BY GREG CAPULLO AND JONATHAN GLAPION

COLORS BY FCO

LETTERS BY RICHARD STARKINGS

COVER BY GREG CAPULLO

PUBLISHER DC COMICS

With the 5th issue of Batman, Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo outdo themselves by putting Batman through the ringer as he is stuck in the labyrinth created by the Court Of Owls.  Not only does Scott Snyder offer up a frantic Batman as he starts his decent into madness while losing his grip on reality. Greg Capullo's art is his best work to date as Capullo starts to change the page layouts, as the reader must start to hold the book vertically and even flip the book upside down.  Doing this not only immerses the reader but adds a sense of confusion as well.  The pacing of the book is frantic in both story and art but it gives us as readers the same sense of despair that Batman himself is going through.

"Beware the Court of Owls, that watches all the time, ruling Gotham from a shadow perch, behind granite and lime.  They watch you at your hearth, they watch you at your bed, speak not a whispered word of them or they'll send the Talon for your head."

Batman issue #5 is by far the best issue of the series to date.  It might also be Scott Synder's and Greg Capullo's best work ever.

I give Batman #5
5 of 5 stars

THREE STOOGES FINALLY ARRIVES

After 14 years in development hell the Farrely brothers have finally made their THREE STOOGES movie: the trailer has arrived:

Follow this link to watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=yCdZje_sTF0

A little trivia about the movie: The rumor in the beginning was that it would be a biopic, however they decided to cast new stooges and make a new set of movies around the new actors paying the original characters that were so popular and now so well endured. Originally set to be Benecio Del Toro (Moe), Sean Penn (Larry), and Jim Carrey (Curly). Over time it all fell through like so many times before.

Eff it. This is literally the 4th Sunday that I've been saying 'I'm going to write this here review on 'Waltz with Bashir''. For the past week, I decided to open with 'eff it', & I imagined it was maybe going to be 2300 or so, & I was going to write about how the kids were running amok around me. But that we all came to the understanding that this was going to be done. Now, it's 2 am. That earlier scene never presented itself. Bottom line, something happened & now I'm in my room w/ the crappy connection. I have no one to blame but myself. ANYWAY! I'm here to do what I've been waiting to do, w/ a bit of added drama uninvited.

I had seen a preview for this, I'm sure, in one of the movies I checked out from the library. Just thought it looked interesting.

This movie is gorgeous! I watched it in Herbrew w/ the English subtitles. You know they never match up. To be honest, there were more than a few times that I didn't need to read the translation. You just knew what they were talking about. Point! (my rating system?). The flow & the work. You remember when you were younger & people talked about 'Whoa, you should totally see Alice in Wonderland or Dark Side of the Moon on acid man'? Well, Waltz with Bashir moves you w/o all of that. You don't need the hightened sense to feel this. It is inspired by actual events. An actual filmmaker/Israeli veteran is having horrible nightmares. He goes around asking comrades that fought alongside him. This is such a neat spin on documentary filmmaking. I know, I know, Waking Life... But, no, this really happened. This has meaning. This is how emotions are carried. These guys, the way they adamently remember specific occurances but the stories don't all match. Through the art, through the flow of the story.

Recommendations: Even though my 4 yr. old was entranced, I do not recommend this for young viewers.

Actually buying it. I did. Off eBay, for $5. Oh yeah.

Despite the popularity of the film and success of private screenings, it is officially banned in Lebanon. (via FB)

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Waltz-with-Bashir/104023719634163?ref=ts&sk=info

One night at a bar, an old friend tells director Ari about a recurring nightmare in which he is chased by 26 vicious dogs. Every night, the same number of beasts. The two men conclude that there's a connection to their Israeli Army mission in the first Lebanon War of the early eighties. Ari is surprised that he can't remember a thing anymore about that period of his life. Intrigued by this riddle, he decides to meet and interview old friends and comrades around the world. He needs to discover the truth about that time and about himself. As Ari delves deeper and deeper into the mystery, his memory begins to creep up in surreal images.

Devastation 2011 wrap-up

So I don’t know crap about video games anymore.  Dig Dug is still the bomb to me, and it was a few years old when I started playing video games.  I don’t know much about Gears of War,  Madden, or even whatever the new Zelda game is called.  But they are pretty, so I went to the Devastation gaming tournament as it passed through Phoenix to see what I could figure out.

When I walked into Devastation it wasn’t laid out as I expected, just one big room, about a football field in size.  Of course what was I to expect, I had never been to a gaming only convention.

A few vendor booths, mostly selling modded or custom game controllers.  Gotham City Comics brought out a great dj.  Anabel Martinez was there with her beautiful video game art.  And Earth Surf Longboards?  That was kind of odd, even they agreed, but they were super nice guys.

Station after station of video game action.

Oh, and some arcade consoles brought down by Castles n Coasters (Thanks, that was nice).

A small group of guys were shooting a documentary around Devastation as it travelled from city to city with this being their starting point.  I’m interested to see how they go about it.  Sorry no website for them yet, but their footage should be shared on the Devastation youtube site.

The Cosplay contest had few quality entrants.  One couple in Mass Effect 3 battle garb had more costume building skill than the majority of the other contestants combined, and won accordingly.

Much of the time the atmosphere was pretty subdued.  Saturday evening I caught the finals for Marvel vs. Capcom on the big screen along with a huge crowd gathered.  Cheers rang out as 43-hit combos were landed.  This was more what I expected.

I was grateful it did not smell like the internet, a little like a bag of Doritos hidden in a laundry hamper though.

I felt more at home when I saw a stormtrooper ready to take the dance battle to the rebel fleet.
